A woman fell from a height of 4 kilometers. How she managed to stay alive

One may wonder whether Joan Murray is lucky or, on the contrary, unlucky.

Judge for yourself: she managed to survive a fall from a height of 4 kilometers.

But she fell directly on the anthill, where she was immediately bitten by poisonous fire ants.

Joan worked as a clerk at the Bank of America.

On September 25, 1999, she boarded the plane from where she was going to parachute.

For unknown reasons, Joan’s main parachute did not open, and the reserve parachute operated only at an altitude of 700 meters and immediately collapsed.

The woman flew in free fall for more than 4 kilometers.

So what’s next…

When Joan hit the ground, her falling speed was 130 kilometers per hour.

The unfortunate woman fell straight on an anthill teeming with fire ants.

Before doctors came to her rescue, Joan had been bitten more than 200 times.

Incredibly, her doctors (one of whom wrote “miracle” on her card) said the ant bites may have contributed to Joan’s survival by causing a massive adrenaline rush that kept her heart from stopping.

The woman received several injuries. But she stayed alive.

After leaving the hospital, she continued to work in a bank.

A few years later, after undergoing more than 20 reconstructive surgeries and countless physiotherapy sessions, Joan returned to work, life and skydiving, making her 37th parachute jump in 2002 with her two daughters, Carmen and Arianna..
