An 8-year—old boy found an old message in a bottle – and decided to find the sender

The bottle with the note drifted in the sea for 25 years until it ended up in the backyard of a little boy. And this was the beginning of a big story.

A note written by the hand of a 14-year-old girl from Quebec, 25 years old, traveled a distance of 100 kilometers on the way to Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, writes CBC Canada. 8-year-old Naima Mitchell found a bottle under a pine tree in the backyard of his house, where he was playing with friends and his brother, Maila. At first the boy thought it was garbage and picked up the bottle to throw it away, but then he saw a folded piece of paper inside.

According to Naima’s mom, Britta Mitchell, the bottle could have been brought by a hurricane that raged in these parts a couple of years ago.
Naima tried to open the lid, but couldn’t. His mom couldn’t do it either. He had to use a can opener and pliers. After twenty minutes of torment, Naima finally took out a letter dated August 12, 1995. “Dear friend, my friends and I decided to write to someone… I sent the bottle sailing in the waters of the Magdalena Islands,” the author wrote in English and French. At the end of the letter there was a signature – Nelly Needed.

The Mitchells, intrigued by the find, decided to search for this name on the Internet and found it on the website of the hospital where the family doctor Nelly Nadeau worked. In her biography it was said that she grew up by the sea in Eastern Canada. Everything pointed to the fact that this was the same Nellie, only now she lived in Alaska.

Naima really wanted to write a reply, although the sender had long been not a teenager, but a 39-year-old woman. His letter hardly found the recipient, as Nelly changed her place of work and residence several times. But still the Mitchells managed to find it, and the envelope finally fell into the right hands.

According to Nelly, the letter brought back memories from her childhood – how, together with a friend, they threw two bottles into the sea during a family vacation. She was under the impression for several days after learning that her message, after 25 years of wandering, turned out to be in the backyard of an 8-year-old boy. The woman sent Naima a reply – but her letter returned without finding the addressee. Nelly did not give up and began to search for the Mitchells through social networks. There were a lot of people willing to participate in an unusual search – and not only on the Internet. People called friends and acquaintances in Nova Scotia, asking if they knew a family with that surname. And she was found very soon.

By some strange chance, the letter returned to Nellie for no reason – the address on the envelope was correct, and the Mitchells did not move anywhere.
Nelly plans to visit Naima. The boy is also looking forward to her arrival. In an interview with Newsweek, he said that he plans to go canoeing along the river with a new pen pal – after all, they both like this activity. In the meantime, Nelly and Naima continue to write letters to each other, deliberately refusing to e—mail, because it’s much more interesting.
