husband and I each have our own apartments. Mine was a gift from my parents when I came of age, while my husband earned his through years of saving, starting from his student days. He gradually built his career in a good company, eventually securing a well-paying position. We had a quiet wedding because we both knew the value of saving money for more important things. Thankfully, we share the same views on finances, both being economists.
Currently, we’re living in my apartment because it’s closer to the city center and makes our commutes to work easier. We decided to rent out my husband’s apartment for some extra income, but this changed when my mother-in-law, along with her daughter Angelica, came into the picture.
Angelica had not been particularly successful in her marriage. She hadn’t achieved much and married someone with similar prospects. It’s unclear what they were thinking when they got married, but planning for their future was certainly not a priority. They seemed to live in the present without considering tomorrow.
It turned out that Angelica was pregnant. They had been renting an apartment, but now, with the impending expenses of a child, they couldn’t afford the rent. So, my mother-in-law insisted that they move in with her while she took over my husband’s apartment. Furthermore, she demanded that we pay her for the utilities in that apartment, as she was already covering Angelica’s expenses.
As if that wasn’t enough, my mother-in-law even suggested that we split the costs of raising Angelica’s child with her. I couldn’t understand why we should financially support Angelica’s family, especially since we, too, were planning to start a family and needed the funds.
Renting out my husband’s apartment was now out of the question, and my mother-in-law seemed to be asserting her rights inappropriately.
