Mayo, the baby elephant, was rescued from a river with strong currents when he somehow ended up there. At that time, he was only a few days old and had been abandoned by his herd.
Fortunately, the rescuers from the sanctuary found him just as hyenas were about to surround him, and the founder of the sanctuary, Roxy Dankvest, became his foster mother.
Now, Mayo is a year and a half old, and he follows Roxy everywhere. She shares that he recognizes her by scent, voice, and in some inexplicable way, he always knows where she is, although she doesn’t know how.
As time goes on, caring for the growing elephant becomes more challenging, as he becomes larger in size, and his visits home become increasingly difficult to handle.
Roxy mentions that Mayo is one of the rare rescued wild animals with whom she has formed such a strong bond, and parting with him will be incredibly difficult for her. However, she has already mentally prepared herself for it, as living in the wild is natural for an elephant.
Currently, Mayo is enjoying his childhood and doesn’t fully grasp the extent of his strength and size, which can sometimes create a bit of chaos in Roxy’s living space when he ventures indoors.
But for now, he is small and mischievous, and his antics are seen as typical childish behavior.
