The mom cat left the kittens on the board. The end of the story is still unpredictable

At the end of August, the crew of the Polish fishing vessel Koł-148 had just left the port of Kolobrzeg and work had begun when it suddenly had to be interrupted. The sailors, Sebastian Szybowski, Milos Uruski and Marek Kovalchuk, found six newborn kittens on board, their mom had left them in the nets after giving birth and had left. So the sailors wiped the kittens with a clean cloth and put them in an empty fish crate. The men could not return to the port, but they had nothing in the boat to take care of the newborn kittens.

So they called Fundacja Ogon Do Góry, a non-profit animal rescue organization, to find out how they could help the kittens. According to the advice of experts, they put a bottle of warm water in the box and made sure that the little ones did not freeze. There were no bottles or milk on board the boat.

After searching the boat, Sebastian and his colleagues found the only suitable thing for feeding the kittens, a small bottle for filling electronic cigarettes. As they were told on the phone, kittens should not be given cow’s milk. Then the men had prepared a weak syrup based on sugar and water. Sebastian washed the small bottle well and began to feed the newborns with glucose every hour. When the man was busy, his colleagues replaced him. Everyone wanted to believe that the kittens would survive.

After four days it was time for the team to return to the port and they were happy to hand over the kittens to the safe hands of NGO volunteers. According to the president of the Fundacja Ogon Do Góry, Eva Visnes, the little ones were immediately sent to the incubator.  Although the kittens survived the first four days without a mom, no one dares to make predictions. “The next few days will be decisive,” the experts said.

Volunteers and health workers fought for the kittens’ lives day and night, but, unfortunately, four out of six kittens died. “Their body could not cope, they were too weak. Our hearts are broken into a thousand pieces,” the Foundation commented on the situation. About two weeks have passed since the kittens were found. The last two cubs in the litter are still alive. They are very weak, but they cling to life, and at the shelter one hopes for a miracle. Fishermen are also worried about kittens. Sebastian Szybowski has already expressed his intention to adopt one of them if he survives.
