The unusual houses that became home for many

Europeans have the stereotype that Africa is an exceptionally hot continent, consisting of deserts and savannahs. In fact, its relief is varied. For example, in Africa there is a huge swamp where people have lived for centuries. Its name is Sudd.

It is located in the White Nile region of South Sudan. The approximate area of the swamp is 150,000 square kilometers. This place is considered the most biologically diverse in the region. This is due to the fact that about 450 species of birds and almost a hundred different mammals live on Sudd.

Obviously, with such a biological diversity, it is difficult to adapt to the Sudd. However, people called the Nilots adapted to the difficult conditions. The Nilots live on small islands, plant vegetable gardens there and try to raise goats. Usually an animal belongs to several families at once.

In the last century, the traditional life of the Nilotic people was almost destroyed. It was wanted to use the Nile for agricultural purposes, which would cause a decrease in the area of the swamp. Fortunately for the indigenous population of these places, the project remained unrealized.

However, last year it was reported that the construction work on the Nile Bypass canal should be completed by 2036. At the moment there is no information about the construction. But activists from all neighboring places and national minorities are ready to fight for their homes.
