Lost in the mountains 380 kilometers from home: the intelligent dog returns home on its own.

Catherine Oriol and Roger Simonis are the proud owners of Pablo, the 2-year-old Jagdterrier. The trio resides in Bezouce near Nîmes and frequently moves around with their dog.

In August 2021, the couple and their beloved dog went on vacation to Italy. On August 19, after 20 days of excursions, they stopped in the mountains near Saint-Martin-de-Belleville in Savoie.

As usual, Pablo explored the surroundings. The sporty pup is trained to follow his owner while mountain biking without fear of taking risks. However, this time, the adventurous dog didn’t return. Catherine and Roger began to worry as night fell.

They waited until the next day, but there was still no sign of Pablo. Roger and his wife set out to search for their four-legged friend. Pablo was exhausted, thin, dehydrated, and smelled strongly of lamb, but he was still in good health.

After a few days of good recovery, Pablo was in excellent shape, ready to move on. His owners decided to invest in a GPS collar to easily locate Pablo in case of another escape.

Canine psychologist Ariane Séveran explains that it’s impossible for him to cover such a short distance of 380 kilometers alone: “It would suppose he’s riding at 6 km/h, 24 hours a day. He has no endurance. It’s possible that Pablo ended up locked in a livestock truck heading south and escaped in time thanks to his ingenuity.
